When Should You Go to Antarctica?

The Antarctica Peninsula awakens in late October, bringing with it a pristine snow-covered environment, penguins busy courting and building nests, Weddell and Fur seals mating, massive icebergs beginning their march, and amazing sunsets keeping photographers inspired and busy. December and January are summer months, with temperatures reaching 35°F/2°C and weather relatively stable. Penguin chicks are at their fluffiest, ice continues to open up, making the first Circle Crossing possible, and Humpback whale spotting is more common. February and March bring peak Humpback whale encounters. Penguin chicks are also more active, receding ice provides for even greater access, and a lower sun means amazingly colorful sunsets. It’s also when fewer ships are in the water, so you’ll feel like you have Antarctica all to yourself. Further details are here

All About Pricing

We know it can be a bit confusing to look at Antarctica trip prices and try to get a clear idea of what your voyage will cost. But we’re here to help you sort it all out.

Prices are always shown on a per-person basis. When you’re looking at the price of a stateroom or suite, you need to multiply that by the number of people in your party. If you’re traveling alone, we will pair you with another single traveler of the same gender who booked your same cabin class (you will also share your included hotel nights with them). If you do not want to share, you may request to remain a single, and we will charge you the per-person cabin rate times 1.7.

All voyage prices include the following:

  • A stay at the Arakur Hotel or a similar premium hotel, plus transfer and breakfast
  • All excursions (landings) in Antarctica, the Falklands, or S. Georgia, depending on voyage
  • All soft drinks, plus wine or beer at dinner
  • A professional-grade Expedition Jacket and muck boots to use on your expedition, plus a stylish black mid-layer puffer jacket to keep

Choosing an Itinerary

No matter which voyage you choose, two things are guaranteed: You will have a life-changing adventure, and you will fall in love with our incredibly wondrous planet. We offer a range of itineraries, each special in its own way; so take some time to browse through them. If you have a specific date or time of year in mind, that’s a good place to start. If you’re time-challenged, that might be another. We have itineraries ranging from 11 to 23 days. We’ve done our best to point out the highlights of each voyage, so let your explorer’s spirit guide you to the one that most touches your heart. You can also check out our destinations pages for more information on individual destinations, and if you need even more information or just want to be inspired, check out some of our recommended books about Antarctica.

Please note that all Antarctica trip dates start on the date you should arrive at the hotel, and end on the date you disembark (which happens in the morning). On-board days are noted separately. Usually, the final day of the itinerary is the day you will fly home. Plan for at least 1-2 days of travel on either side of your arrival and departure dates. For Antarctica, all International flights land in Buenos Aires. You will continue from there on a separate domestic flight to Ushuaia or Puerto Madryn.

Groups of six or more may be eligible for a group discount. Once you’ve determined the voyage you’re interested in, refer to the descriptions below for your particular ship. Note that Ocean Albatros and Ocean Nova are sister ships, so their stateroom and suite options are the same.

Adventure Options

Every itinerary has adventure activities that you may want to consider when you book. Some, like kayaking, camping, and our photography program, are extremely popular and sell out quickly, so we highly recommend you book those at time of deposit.

Camping – $295

Get a taste of what it must have been like for the earliest Antarctic explorers (albeit with much better gear!) Sleeping under the stars in a bivvy sack is a truly magical experience.  Rest assured you’ll be plenty warm in your insulated sleeping bag! Camping is only available on Antarctica itineraries 13 days or longer. And not available on Falklands, S. Georgia itineraries. Weather permitting, we camp once per voyage.

Camping sells out quickly. Be sure to sign up at time of deposit.

Kayaking – We Offer Two Options

Immersive Kayaking – $895: This program is designed for those guests who want to kayak as much as possible during their voyage. Immersive Kayaking is limited to 10 (confirm?) participants, with a dedicated kayak guide and safety Zodiac. Immersive paddlers will have the opportunity to kayak during most excursions and landings, up to twice daily, weather and conditions permitting.

Discover Kayaking – $250: This option is for those guests who just want a taste of the Antarctic kayaking experience. Each participant kayaks once per voyage in a group of 14 with a dedicated guide team and safety Zodiac. Total number of available kayaking spots on each departure will vary by itinerary length and weather, but we aim to get groups on the water at every opportunity.

Kayaking sells out quickly. Be sure to sign up at time of deposit.

Photography – We Offer Two Options

Onboard Photography Coach – Fee and available to all on every voyage: Our photography coaches are always on hand to give advice on Zodiac cruises, on-shore landings, or on deck. In addition, they will share ongoing presentations to help you best address the challenges of shooting in the unique and unpredictable polar regions. Your onboard coach will also be documenting your expedition, which will be presented to you in a USB flash drive keepsake to share with friends and family back home.

Immersive Photography Program – $495 for Peninsula voyages / $995 for Falklands, So Georgia voyages:
For experienced photographers, our immersive program will pair you with a small group and an award-winning photography instructor. Daily outings under the watchful eye of your instructor will ensure that you make the most of every photographic outing, while honing your skills, guided by a seasoned professional. On board workshops and reviews will cover every aspect of shot selection, artistic refinement, and processing your images.

Maximum 18 participants, pre-booking recommended. Available on select voyages starting in November, 2026.

Snowshoeing – $150

Snowshoeing allows you to hike across soft, powdery snow up gentle slopes to reach unique vantage points, rewarding you with spectacular views and photo opportunities. Snowshoeing is as basic as hiking, and you don’t need previous experience to take part. Our highly experienced mountain guides will introduce you to the program, get you properly equipped and, weather permitting, will have you on your way in conjunction with our zodiac  landings. This program is offered on early season departures (November to December) aboard Ocean Albatros and Ocean Victory and, as you might imagine, is dependent on good snow conditions.

Snowshoeing can be booked on board during your voyage.

Citizen Science – Included

All guests have the opportunity to help us collect data for ongoing real-world scientific research projects. There are a number of projects you can take part in, so be sure to check out the sign-up sheets when you board the ship.

You do not need to sign up in advance to participate in our Citizen Science program.

Polar Plunge – Included

It sounds like a crazy thing to do, but there are actually a number of reasons why hurling oneself into freezing cold water is one of our top activities.

You do not need to sign up in advance to participate in the Polar Plunge.
